This paper presents a plasma-based antenna capable of beamforming for communication systems. Utilizing plasma technology, this method offers low-complexity and low-cost beamforming, enabling control over the direction and width of the radiated beam from a helical antenna. The proposed antenna comprises an axial mode helical antenna surrounded by arrays of plasma elements shaped like cups. These plasma elements, forming a reflector array, can be individually activated or deactivated to achieve desired radiation characteristics for the helical antenna. Symmetric activation of specific elements within a plasma cup allows for beamwidth control. Furthermore, asymmetric configuration of plasma reflectors, such as half-cups, facilitates steering the end-fire beam pattern of the helical antenna in three-dimensional space. This steering capability is achieved by using a second half-cup in the opposite direction of the first cup. A prototype of the designed antenna is fabricated, and its radiation characteristics for various plasma reflector configurations are measured. The proposed method is validated through good agreement between simulation and measurement results.
