The effect of polytetrahydrofuran as a reactive plasticizer on the properties of HTPB-based propellants |

When producing a solid propellant, the viscosity of the propellant slurry should be such that it can be processed easily. Conventional plasticizers such as dioctyl adipate (DOA) and dioctyl sebacate (DOS), due to migration cause loss of mechanical properties, and combustion instability, which affects the reliability and safety properties of propellants during exploitation. One of the ways to reduce or prevent the migration of plasticizers is to use reactive plasticizers as a substitute. Considering that the chemical structure of polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) is similar to hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), PTHF is easily and uniformly mixed with HTPB. So PTHF is expected to be useful not only as a binder but also as a plasticizer. To evaluate PTHF as a reactive plasticizer, the effect of this plasticizer on various propellant properties has been briefly investigated. The results have shown that the processing, mechanical properties and thermal decomposition behavior of HTPB binder are improved by adding small amounts of PTHF to HTPB. |
